About Lehrmitt Design Studios

We never stop thinking about design in new ways.

Since 1996, Lehrmitt Design Studios has been a leading creative design and manufacturing company located in Austin, TX. We love Austin and have found this city, with its hive of creativity and technology, a great place to live, work, and collaborate with other visionaries. We specialize in high-quality wallcoverings and new technologies for applying textured surfaces to consumer products.

For multiple clients, we have designed product and developed strategies to include brand positioning, package design and opening up new markets.

Our newest innovation harnesses the power of 3D printing to create mold textures for consumer products and artistic design on chocolates. Surface Skins™ allow product manufacturers to create mold textures on plastic – and candy – in a way that has never been done before. Easy, economical and fast, Surface Skins create new possibilities for product developers to surprise and delight their customers with innovative,  fresh new designs.

At Lehrmitt Design Studios, we get excited about using cutting-edge technology to inspire new ways to explore ideas and create design solutions.

Bob Lehrmitt, designer of mold textures

Fresh out of RISD I had the great fortune to live and work in Persia for a number of years as a design consultant to the Empress of Iran, Farah, developing modern applications for traditional textile weaving. My passion has always been finding creative solutions to design problems and the study of the creative process itself. My curiosity, eclectic tastes and my keen interest in travel to exotic locales has provided me with a broad palate of experiences and knowledge to bring to bear on all my projects.

After returning to the United States, I worked for many years as the Creative Manager for GENON Contract Wallcoverings before founding Lehrmitt Design Studios, Inc in 1996 in Austin, Texas. My work in the commercial wall covering industry has allowed me to apply my expertise to product, manufacturing, packaging and branding. I have also been involved in the fine arts – furniture, textiles, jewelry, fashion and interior design.

Alaina Chambers joined me in 2004 and today most of our work is still in the commercial wall covering market. We continue, however, to enjoy opportunities to diversify and explore new challenges while remaining selective about the kinds of projects and clients we take on.

In a computer age of long distances and remote connections, I value the opportunity to still touch and feel the things I get to work with. Doing this helps me stay connected to them. In our work, Bob and I try to keep a good balance between digital reality and everyday reality, small pictures and big pictures. I like to think of Bob as a big picture guy. The part I enjoy is getting into the details of design.

While at Lehrmitt Design Studios, I co-founded a screen printing company specializing in home textiles. I ran the business, taught silk screen and design for several years at a private Austin high school, and as a side project worked with a group of architects and designers to create a unique, temporary public art project for the city. Design has been a facet of all aspects of my life. More recently, my interests have expanded into MIG and TIG Welding where I hope to fabricate pieces for the home.

Years of collaboration have made us into a strong team. Bob’s experience and expertise along with my fresh eye for detail have led us to some exciting and unorthodox solutions. For me, that’s the best part. We love a challenge, because it brings out the best in both of us.
